When Fletcher Ekern steps foot on East Tennessee State’s campus next Fall, he won’t be alone. With him will be current FC Alliance player and Buccaneer commit Avery Wang, and greeting him will be four former FC Alliance players currently rostered with the NCAA Division 1 program. As FC Alliance has racked up accolades on the club level, ETSU has been scooping up players. Steven Matlock, Dalton Guzman, Nick Dykes, David Geno and Jonny Campbell are all former FC Alliance players currently rostered with the team. All except Geno are underclassmen, and they are all contributors to the nationally relevant program which knocked off a national top ten team earlier this year.
East Tennessee State has built a rock solid reputation on the national scene. Their 1-0 upset of national #8 Alabama-Birmingham earlier this year was preceded by a 1-0 win over Kentucky. In the last couple of years, they’ve recorded wins over Virginia Tech and Clemson, a 2-2 tie with Wake Forest, and a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to superpower North Carolina.
Amazingly, the school has recorded four wins and four ties over the last three years against Top 25 teams.
Ekern, a region 3 ODP player, will be the seventh player in a two year period to wear the Buccaneer jersey.
