Team wins Premier division of showcase tournament
Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida is considered by many as one of the most magical places on Earth. For most kids, telling them you’re going to Disney means rollercoasters, rides and meeting characters with big ears. However, for the most elite soccer players, going to Disney means something entirely different. It means you will be competing against some of the nation’s best teams in one of the country’s most prestigious soccer tournaments. FC Alliance’s 95 Girls Black did just that over the New Year’s holidays, and they walked away as champions.
To earn the Premier-Black division title, Coach Josh Gray’s squad survived a tough trek through a loaded field. Summer Lanter kick started the tournament with a four goal outburst in a 5-1 win over Quickstrike (New York). She would add three more goals in a 4-2 win over MatchFit of New Jersey. From there, things became much more difficult for the unbeaten FC Alliance squad. 95 Black survived a thrilling 0-0 tie with Florida powerhouse West Pines on the third day to claim their bracket on total points. Katie Emig and Keagan McCoy combined in net to preserve the clean sheet. The championship game featured Big Sun YSL, also of Florida. Lanter and Marci Carter scored as FC Alliance staked their claim to a Disney title. Lanter finished the event with 8 goals in 4 games.
The Disney College Showcase, sponsored by European professional giants AS Roma, is played in the lush Wide World of Sports Complex on the resort property. It is the same property which has hosted the Under Armor High School football All-American game, the NCAA Division 3 soccer national championships, and NCAA basketball tournaments such as the Tip-Off Classic and Old Spice Classic (in which Tennessee participated in 2008).
